How to Prepare Furniture and Décor for Interior Painting

Interior painting goes more smoothly when the room is prepared before the first drop cloth is placed. A little planning protects your belongings, gives the crew clear access to the work area, and helps prevent last-minute delays.

You do not need to empty an entire home for an interior project, but preparing each room carefully makes a noticeable difference in the quality and efficiency of the work.

Start by clearing smaller belongings

Remove items that are easy to pack and easy to damage. This includes photos, books, lamps, plants, loose electronics, curtains, wall décor, and countertop items. Pack fragile belongings away from the work area instead of placing them in a corner of the same room.

Clearing these items creates access to walls, trim, doors, ceilings, outlets, and closets. It also means fewer items need to be moved or protected while painting is underway.

Move and protect furniture

Move smaller furniture to another room whenever possible. Larger items can often be placed in the center of the room and covered with clean plastic or canvas protection. Let your painting team know in advance about antiques, delicate finishes, or furniture that cannot be moved.

  • Move furniture at least several feet away from walls when possible
  • Remove lamps, décor, and objects from tables and shelving
  • Identify valuable or fragile pieces that need extra protection
  • Keep clear walking paths from the entry to the work area

Take down wall-mounted items

Artwork, mirrors, removable shelves, hooks, and window treatments should be handled before the project begins. Decide whether nail holes should be filled and whether existing hardware will be reinstalled after the paint has cured.

A quick photo of your wall arrangement can make it easier to rehang décor when the project is complete. It also helps you decide whether a previous layout still works with the new color.

Do not overlook nearby surfaces

Clear kitchen counters, bathroom vanities, built-in shelving, and work surfaces. Relocate pet supplies, aquariums, and food-preparation items. If a room has sensitive electronics, discuss whether they should be removed or protected before sanding and surface preparation start.

Plan for pets, children, and your routine

Painters need room to use ladders safely and access outlets and water when needed. Make a plan to keep children and pets out of active work areas, and ask about the expected schedule, ventilation, dry time, and when a room can return to normal use.
